What happens when a cap is exceeded?

When a spend cap is hit: - 429 (`rate_limit`-style error) - No new charge is recorded This differs from 402 (balance): quota blocks happen before the model is invoked.

How are budget periods calculated?

Spend caps use UTC period boundaries (calendar month or custom — see console settings). Counters reset when the period rolls over. Teams in other time zones should note boundaries are UTC, not local time.

Are budget alerts the same as hard caps?

No: Alerts fire on threshold crossings (e.g. 79% → 80%), at most once per period bucket. Hard caps block instantly. Enable both to avoid surprise outages. Related: Console Budget · Notifications
